New England Culinary Institute, Full-Time Academic Instructor
Liberal Arts/General Education
Mr. Darryl Benjamin has been a wonderful teacher. His guidance and criticism makes me want to be a better writer. I feel assured and encouraged with every single projects. Although the topic of most of my essays was quite depressing in nature, he never berated me for them, instead he has been wonderful in his gentle inputs. . . I am empowered by my writings and how it makes me dig deep and evaluate my life in general. I feel cleansed and energized to work hard in order to achieve my goals for this year. I am very thankful for all the amazing experience this class has brought me.
At first I thought that a writing class in culinary school was a little pointless. But now that the class is coming to a close I realized I was completely wrong. It doesn’t matter what field I am in, I have learned it is important to know how to effectively communicate through writing. Even though the class was a few weeks long I have seen a great improvement in my writing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class and I’m glad I had the opportunity to do a variety of different writing exercises. I also challenged myself to write more and come up with more decisive thoughts.
Writing in this class has been a rewarding and challenging experience.
Written Expression has been one of the most rewarding writing classes I have taken to date. I have been thoroughly engaged in the class as well as the work assigned. . . . Input from Darryl has given me a fresh and experienced set of eyes to see my writing in a new way.
I have learned a lot in written expression. I feel that my work has greatly improved over the past 6 weeks. I thank you Darryl for your hard work and excellent teaching skills.
In the beginning of Written Expression, I thought I could glide by and write some easy pieces; I soon learned that this class was much more than a simple college writing course. My instructor reinforced the crucial writing skills that I had forgotten since high school, and I embraced the assignments. . . Throughout the course I made sure that my writing was impeccable and expressive. I enjoyed the class, the instructor, and the assignments. I would even go as far as to say I would take another class like this again.
I believed to have done so well in this class because writing is something that I am passionate about. I enjoy writing, so most of the assignments came natural to me. A big contribution factor was also my inspirational instructor, Darryl Benjamin. Without Darryl’s passion, respect, talent, and support, I could not have done as exceptionally.
“Disregard the MS [Meet Standards] sections of the rubric. You should only be concerned with ES [Exceed Standards] requirements,” Darryl told us on the first day as we looked over the rubrics for the class. Those words made a big impression on me. I didn’t think “Oh this assignment will get a passing grade, at least.” I applied myself to the best of my abilities. Because I did this I learned not just about writing, but about keeping an open mind about learning itself.
My goal for this class was to not suck, or at least suck a little less each day. I have achieved my goal and then some. In this class I was given the opportunity to expand my mind and search my soul as I wrote. I was never given this opportunity in writing. Experiencing this style of teaching has really brought forth a new passion for words, and writing. . .From what I gather about this class, it is about growth. In my case, being able to write a page on anything is impressive so to be able to sit here and look at a 20-some page portfolio of works that come from me is something I am very proud of. I have evolved into someone who now enjoys writing and reading. This class has given me the confidence to feel good about what I write. . .Another thing this class has enabled for me is that ability to speak my mind in written form. When before I would get stuck and have a few lines I now can’t seem to stop writing and I’m very much enjoying it.
Out of all the English classes I have taken in my life, I believe that I did the best in the Written Expression class here at NECI. I also believe that I have learned more about computers and word processing in this class then in previous classes. I put in a lot of effort into the course work given, more so than any English class in grade school. . . I took all critiques from the instructor to heart and worked on improving my writings with the advice given. The most notable of these critiques would be my résumé. Before the instructor gave us tips and editing advice on how it should be arranged and presented my resume was very cramped and repetitive. But after the careful instructions of the instructor, I was able to format my résumé in a way that was more appealing to the eye and organized. . .This course really opened my eyes to different writing styles and methods I was not aware of before. I can truthfully say that this class made me a better writer and I will use the lessons learned in future course work and everyday life.
Being able to write 500 words in a 30 minute session is a big improvement from the starting point of only 200 or so words. Written Expression has helped me put my thoughts together and get them on paper in a more organized manner. Your feedback has really been important to this process.
During the past 3 months in Written Expression I felt I have learned a great deal. From the small things like formatting or becoming more organized with my files, I felt I have definitely gotten my money’s worth and a school where that’s not always the case. During this course, I have grown as a writer and as a person. Before this class I was not very confident with my writing and I can say today that I am a much more confident writer and person. . .I hope that you had as much fun as I did in this class. I got to really know classmates in ways that I never would have without this class. It is definitely one of the best classes I’ve taken at NECI, and I would tell that to any prospective student. Thank you, Darryl.
At first I was really dreading this class. After our first day I was really blown away with how much I loved it! . . .Writing prompts with time limits pushed me to write and not allow writer’s block. . . I plan to continue to write and will remember what I have learned to constantly challenge myself to be and do better.
I can honestly say I have witnessed myself grow not only as a writer but a thinker. . .I am extremely proud of the writing in my final portfolio. . . When we first started I thought I would hate having to be in a room three days a week for a few hours a day but I really enjoyed it. . . I hope that I will be able to take another class with you when I switch over to the HRM program.
I enjoyed this class very much. It has instilled a sense of trust with my classmates, and felt that I have developed a lasting professional relationship with the instructor. I most enjoyed the opportunity to read my pieces of work aloud and really here my true voice as a writer. I feel that my most successful piece was the final draft of my résumé and am very excited about the outcome. . .I really hope to stay in touch with the instructor as I feel I have learned very practical and useful information, and look forward to seeing him in six months.
I always hated English classes and writing is not my strongest suit, but after the first class I knew it was different than any of the English classes I have taken. . . After the feedback I felt as though I could write a novel.
I have been more open in this class than any other class I have been a part of, and it shows in the countless essays I put pieces of my heart and soul into. . . I have always loved writing, but I never got into it until I came to this class . . .I would like to thank you, Darryl, for being a dream tutor. Your laid back aura, glowing positivity, and your understanding of emotions was what I needed to feel inspired again.
I think that the class work in this class was exceptionally appropriate and helpful.
This was a course I didn’t mind waking up for. . . Darryl demanded creativity and pushed us to escape our literary comfort zones. I never enjoyed writing “professional” essays so much in any past class that I can remember, and none were as good as these that I’ve written over the past weeks. . . This school really is an amazing place. It pushes me every day to expand and progress in areas that in the past I have almost ignored.
I truly enjoyed Written Expression, and wish that it continued for the next six weeks.
Written Expression was a very fun and enjoyable class for me surprisingly. This class was an eye-opener for me regarding writing.
This class was very enjoyable and I’ve always been a fan of writing but with my learning disability, it’s been always a challenge.
I have always felt that my writing is very weak, but I’ve managed to strengthen it beyond what I ever thought possible.
I am leaving this class with a much greater knowledge and appreciation for writing. I have learned many things I can use in my future as a chef.
I will be sad to have to no longer be in this class every week, but it won’t stop me from writing. I will try to untangle the mess of emotions and memories inside my head, bring my thoughts to the physical page, sharing with the people that I love all of life’s importances. Thank you very much Darryl for everything that you have given me in this class.
I am proud to report that I have finally found a way to enjoy writing. I worked hard and am glad to have taken this class. Thank you for your time and effort, I’ve only had one other English teacher who made English tolerable, and even then I was too set in my thick head to allow myself to learn to the extent that I found I could.
I have definitely grown in talent and ability from taking this class. I find that I am thinking more about what I write and I try to make each word more meaningful.
It was a new experience for me learning all the different ways to make a paper easier to read, keep it entertaining, and make it effective.
21st CENTURY COMMUNICATIONS (Communications in the Digital Age)
As always Darryl, thank you for a wonderful class. It was so nice to get to have you as a teacher for both semesters of my time at NECI. I appreciate everything you taught me and how enthusiastic you are about your job as an educator. I will most definitely be keeping in touch. Thank you again and I hope you enjoy your time teaching!
I feel like this class has helped open up my mind to a new way of thinking and discussing topics and I think I grew into it well. I have truly enjoyed this class and will take a lot away from it. I loved the new ways it made me think and I loved the in class discussions where we were able to state our own opinions and feelings and experiences. Thank you so much and I look forward to the classes we have with you for mod 6. Thank you so much for this class I really loved it.
A technology and computer class would not have been my first choice if I were given the option. After 3 months of lessons about 21st century communications, I am very glad that it was a required course. I learned an abundance of information that will be invaluable in my future as a person living in the 21st century. . . During the course, I learned a great amount of information that was so diverse, yet connected at the same time. I was given the opportunity to strengthen my critical thinking and collaborative skills. Thank you Darryl, I really enjoyed the class!
Thank you making this fun and enjoyable. I really loved having you as a teacher for the last six months. I have learned so much from you.
I enjoyed the class. It opened my eyes to some things about the way we communicate and how we should be conscious of managing our communication so it does not wear us down.
Thank you, Darryl, for everything that you have taught me in the past 6 months. It is all greatly appreciated and I will take the memories with me for my entire life. I will miss having class with you and all of the discussions we’ve had.
It was a pleasure to be in this class and I feel that I learned a lot of new information that I had no idea was out there.
I want to thank you for a great semester Darryl. I learned a lot from this class and it has even opened up my mind to a lot of technological advancements, and things to look out for the future. I now feel a lot more knowledgeable over what 21st Century Communications involves. Thanks so much!
CRITICAL ISSUES IN LEADERSHIP
I just wanted to add a little note at the end of this assignment for you.
Throughout the past three years at NECI I have learned a great many things that have changed my view of the world and the food that I eat. Most of which I have you to thank for. In every class that I have had you as my teacher my mind has been expanded. I thank you so very much for all of the knowledge that you have given me. I know that it has made me a better and well-rounded person and I am forever grateful for it.
You are a wonderful teacher and I am greatly saddened I will have no more classes with you.
I hope that your life will be filled with happiness and great food.
Follow your bliss!
This class has taught me so much about leadership and how it is not always just something that some people are naturally good at, but something that can be studied as almost a science. I loved learning about different styles of leadership that work well especially in our industry and found all of the information really relevant and useful. Thank you for having such a great class I really appreciate it Darryl!
I really enjoyed the course, and I can truthfully say I am not walking away empty handed in any way. I want to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Benjamin for all the support and knowledge provided throughout my time in the US, it is greatly appreciated, and I promise to continue to execute everything taught to me in whatever way possible in my future endeavors.
I enjoyed participating in a method of teaching (Socratic) that I have not yet experienced, and plan on taking many of the practices I have learned here into my own teaching career.
My writing has improved with this class and I find myself writing more often on my own time. I found the time when we partnered with a fellow student to do the proof reading very useful and valuable. Brian Monde and I had on many occasions used this method on both class papers and professional papers (resumes, cover letters, etc…). Spending time on my work has helped to improve my writing assignments by being able to cohesively portray my thoughts. . . This class has definitely opened my eyes to new issues that will follow me throughout my career.
MARKETING THEORY AND RESEARCH
Throughout my very first marketing class, I’ve not only learned a great deal of marketing ideas I’ll be able to practice one day myself, but I’ve also been able to affect my school in a positive way, which is something I think most of us yearn to do. . . Without this class, I also wouldn’t know how much work goes into making a marketing plan. . . I learned a great wealth of knowledge from this class, which I can take with me for the rest of my life.
I loved when Darryl went over our papers in class. I learned that a good way to revise a paper is to read it out loud. . . Darryl really helped me to become a better writer and gave me some great tools to use in future writings.
